Police: Manhunt underway after attempted robbery, series of shootings in San Fernando Valley
CANOGA PARK, Calif. (FOX 11) - A manhunt is underway after a man is accused of killing at least three people, including his father and brother, in a series of shootings in San Fernando Valley on Thursday morning, said police.
Gerry Dean Zaragoza, 26, is accused of shooting and killing his 50-year-old father and 20-year-old brother inside their apartment, authorities said. His mother was also wounded.
The first shooting happened around 2 a.m. at the family's apartment home located near the intersection of Roscoe and Topanga Canyon boulevards. The 911 call came from the mother who locked herself inside a bathroom after her husband and son were shot, police said.
Arriving officers discovered two men suffering from bullet wounds inside the apartment. They were pronounced dead the scene, authorities said.
The mother was taken to a local hospital. She was in stable condition, authorities confirmed.
Zaragoza had a history of threatening to kill his family, police said.
Within the hour of the first shooting, police were informed of a shooting outside of a Shell gas station in North Hollywood near the intersection of Vineland Avenue and Vanowen Street around 2:45 a.m. Police on the scene discovered a man and woman suffering from gunshot wounds. It is believed the woman was Zaragoza's ex-girlfriend. They were both taken to a local hospital where she died. The man was listed in critical condition and underwent surgery.
A person was detained for questioning in the gas station shooting.
The identities of the victims were not immediately released.
Police were guarding the female victim's home in North Hollywood.
Hours later, Zaragoza was reportedly located after attempted to rob a man at an ATM outside a Bank of America located on Sherman Way and Topanga Canyon Blvd just before 8:30 a.m. He remains at large.
Zaragoza is considered "armed and dangerous." He was last seen driving a blue Jeep Liberty with red, white and yellow paper plates. If you see the accused gunman, do not approach him and contact police.
