3 BART police officers hospitalized after crash at West Oakland station

At least three BART police officers and a civilian were injured and hospitalized Saturday afternoon from a collision at the West Oakland BART Station, according to officials.

The Oakland Fire Department, who responded to the scene, told KTVU that the collision occurred when BART police were responding to a call near Seventh Street and Mandela Parkway shortly before 2:45 p.m. Two patrol cars and a medical supply van collided with each other.

All four injured people were taken to a hospital and their conditions remain unknown.

Video of the scene shows more than half a dozen BART police cruisers, including one with significant damage. Debris was seen scattered throughout the area, and glass littered upon the ground.

A deployed airbag and a cracked windshield can also be seen in the damaged vehicle.

He said he did not see the police officers slow down before they hit "nose-to-nose."

An employee at the nearby store echoed a similar statement, saying he didn't see the police cars slow down before the crash, and that they were coming down the street "hella fast" before they collided.

The cause of the crash remains unclear.

Oakland police confirmed a crash took place in the area involving BART police patrol vehicles and that the occupants suffered injuries from the collision.

Oakland police said it's unknown if alcohol or drugs played a factor.

KTVU reached out to the BART Police Department and had not heard back by the time of publication.
