DOWNEY, Calif. - Police are investigating after four people were shot at a Downey bar early Saturday morning.
It happened around 1:10 a.m. at the Mambo Grill on Downey Avenue. Police were called to the bar for reports of gunshots. When they got there, they found four people had been shot.
According to police, the shooter and the women he was with were escorted out of the bar earlier in the night for being "unruly." They left, but returned a few minutes later, driving a dark-colored SUV past the bar. Someone in the car shot from the car into the bar, hitting the four people. The SUV then sped away heading south down Downey.
The four shooting victims were brought to the hospital in "critical but stable condition."
On Monday, September 25, two days after the shooting, the Downey Police Department announced 37-year-old Temo Gaxiola was arrested in connection to the quadruple shooting. As of Monday, officials have not announced what Gaxiola will be charged with.
A woman who was with him was listed as a person of interest in the earlier rounds of the investigation but is not necessarily labeled as a suspect in the shooting, unlike Gaxiola. Officials did not specify the Gaxiola and the woman's relationship.
In response to the shooting, Downey Mayor Claudia M. Frometa issued a statement saying in part how "angry" she was that "the cowards who opened fire" got away, calling it a "random act of violence."
Frometa said the city is looking into implementing additional safety measures as a result of the shooting, including downtown curfews, possible change of closing times for bars, enforcing occupancy load at downtown bars and restaurants, and adding security cameras downtown, particularly between Firestone and 3rd Street.
Anyone with information about them was asked to call the Downey Police Department at 562-904-2308, or investigators at 562-904-2391. Anonymous tips can also be left by calling Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or submitting a tip at lacrimestoppers.org.
