Beach communities urge no large gatherings to end bummer summer

The unofficial end of our bummer summer is coming up, but don’t get any crazy ideas. Los Angeles County says if Labor Day weekend gets too crowded, Beaches & Harbor could have to close the beaches but it doesn’t have any plans to.

“This is not a Labor Day weekend that will be full of celebrations,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti. “You need to cancel all plans for gatherings and let’s make sure we keep our eyes on the prize of getting under 100 cases per 100,000 over a 14-day period.”

That’s the criteria for counties to get off the state’s watch-list so more indoor businesses can reopen, kids can go back to school and most importantly, it will mean fewer people will get sick or die from COVID-19.

Ventura and Orange are also asking people to follow health safety guidelines during the busy holiday weekend if possible.

“We really encourage people to follow the guidelines, wear face coverings if they can’t keep six feet from each other and if they don’t live in same household they need to keep distance from each other,” said Orange County Public Health Director Dr. Clayton Chau. “We truly encourage people to have a party through Skype or FaceTime and stay home if you don’t need to be out.”
