Boy hit by car while running from wasp nest

An 8-year-old boy is dead after he was hit by a car in Lewisville Sunday afternoon.

The accident happened in the Northwood Mobile Home Park along Business Highway 121 near Interstate 35E.

Police said Alex Ramirez was playing with three other friends when they disrupted a wasp's nest. They started running and he ran in front of a car and was hit.

"She came out with her phone on, so that makes me think she was on her phone," said Gabriel Arencibia, who was playing with Alex when the accident happened. "And that's why she hit him. And she said 'It wasn't my fault! It wasn't my fault! Is he okay?'"

Gabriel called 911 while his other two friends ran to get Alex's dad.

"His dad was devastated. He kept yelling out 'My son! My son!'" said Gabriel. "When he got there, he just carried him to the grass."

A memorial marks the spot where Alex's dad laid his little boy on the ground. An ambulance took Alex to the hospital where he died.

Alex's dad said words can't describe how he's feeling. His mom says she feels guilty she never enrolled her son in a soccer league like his wanted.

Alex's sister says her little brother loved playing sports with his friends in the neighborhood.

"They would always come right after school and knock looking for him," explained Maria Ramirez. "He would play with them, soccer, basketball, anything."

Family members said Alex also had a big, caring heart and was an excellence student at Central Elementary.

The 20-year-old woman who was driving the car was only cited for not having proof of insurance. Police are still investigating the case, but said they do not believe alcohol or excessive speed were factors.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for Alex's funeral fund.
