Taking out the trash and the recycling bin won't be enough for California residents and businesses starting in 2022.

The new law, SB 1383 – which kicks in next calendar year – requires every California jurisdiction to provide organic waste collection services to all residents and businesses, according to the state's website.

Below is what is considered organic waste:

  • Food
  • Green material
  • Landscape
  • Pruning waste
  • Organic textiles
  • Carpets
  • Lumber
  • Wood
  • Paper products
  • Printing
  • Writing paper
  • Manure
  • Biosolids
  • Digestate
  • Sludges

COLLECTION REQUIREMENTS

Below is a breakdown of what Californians are required to do for SB 1383 based on where they live or work:

Residents are required to subscribe to an organic waste collection service and participate in their jurisdiction's curbside collection service. Residents must correctly sort their organic waste into the right containers, according to the state's website.

MULTIPLE-FAMILY RESIDENTS AND MULTI-FAMILY COMPLEXES

Apartment homes and multiple-family residents are required to either 1) subscribe and participate in their jurisdiction's curbside collection service or 2) self-haul organic waste to a specified composting facility, community composting program, or other collection activity/program.

Apartment management or multiple-family complex management must provide organic waste collection services for their employees and tenants.

BUSINESSES

Businesses are required to either 1) Subscribe and participate in their jurisdiction's curbside collection service or 2) Self-haul the organic waste to a specified facility, community composting program, or other collection activity/program.
