California wildfire burns down homes in San Bernardino County

Edgehill Fire fully contained

The fire burned 54 acres and destroyed 5 homes.

Firefighters reached full containment Tuesday after a massive fire broke out and destroyed several homes in the Inland Empire.

The San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to what was initially a vegetation fire on Little Mountain Drive in the Shandin Hills neighborhood of San Bernardino on Monday afternoon.

SkyFOX was over the scene of what was previously called the "Edgehill Fire" around 3 p.m. as homes, cars, trailers and buildings burned down.

The fire destroyed five single-family homes and one outbuilding. It also damaged three single-family homes.

The fire ultimately burned 54 acres when it reached 100% containment.

In addition, one person was detained in connection to the fire and was later released, officials with the San Bernardino Police Department said.

IE man reacts to homes burning in neighborhood

A massive fire continues to burn down homes in a San Bernardino neighborhood. Good Day LA's Mario Ramirez spoke with a resident who said his neighbor lost their home and three dogs.

One resident told FOX 11 that she had just got off work and came home to see her neighborhood in flames. She thanked the community for coming together to help save her home and others.

Community coming together as fire forces evacuations

San Bernardino resident Sandy Schneider spoke to FOX 11 after a massive brush fire sparked in her neighborhood Monday. She said the community came together to help one another and save her home.

EVACUATION ORDERS

Evacuation orders have since been lifted on Tuesday but the following were impacted when the fire broke out the previous day on August 5:

  • South of Ridge Line Drive [Evacuation order lifted]
  • North of and to Edgehill Road [Evacuation order lifted]
  • West to Beverly Drive [Evacuation order lifted]
  • East to Circle Road [Evacuation order lifted]

It is unknown if there are injuries or deaths linked to the Edgehill Fire. 

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Officials did not say why that one person was detained after the fire.
