Chatsworth residents heartbroken after someone intentionally runs over beloved peacocks
LOS ANGELES (FOX 11) - Residents in a Chatsworth community are outraged and heartbroken after they say someone intentionally ran over and killed two peacocks; and it's not the first time the birds have been targeted.
They say someone in their community is purposely killing and injuring the birds.
The community held a meeting Thursday night to discuss the issue.
"We sit there and watch the peacocks, they're just so beautiful", said Rebecca Ritter.
In the Chatsworth Lake Manor area peacocks are around every corner. The colorful birds are part of a tight-knit community that loves and respects them.
But the community says on Wednesday two of the birds were intentionally targeted and run over by a driver in a pickup truck. The birds died on impact.
Security video shows the truck just seconds after it hit the birds and witness Andrei Ferreira says the driver sped up before crushing them.
"I saw this guy coming, and he didn't even slow down whatsoever he just kind of went through them. I saw one of the peacocks go under the wheel and that one died immediately the other one his head or something got run over and it took about 5 minutes or so for that one to die slowly," said Ferreira.
During Thursday's meeting the community said they know who the driver is -- a local resident who has allegedly targeted and killed peacocks before.
"He's done it repeatedly this isn't the first time and I don't believe it will be the last time," said resident Amy Singer.
"Were devastated, they're a huge part of our community, they're a reason why I moved into this place," mentioned Dot Nelson.
"There are people that just don't like peacocks, however, to abuse them, to harm them, to do things that are frankly against the law, we don't tolerate in this community," added resident Kip Dradeck.
These residents say they are taking action before it gets even worse.
"This isn't the first time with this particular person, this person isn't just attacking peacocks he's attacking all animals, all wildlife, he's just an angry person and something needs to get done before it's a child".
