CHP cracking down on DUI drivers this Labor Day weekend
LOS ANGELES (FOX 11) - Officers will be out in full force this weekend making sure people don't drink and drive.
Friday through Monday night officers will be looking for people driving impaired or violating other traffic laws as part of the annual Labor Day weekend enforcement campaign.
During the 2018 Labor Day weekend CHP officers statewide arrested 1,084 motorists on suspicion of driving under the influence, a roughly 8% increase from the same period in 2017.
Thirty-six people died in wrecks investigated by the CHP throughout California over Labor Day weekend 2018, according to the agency.
The California Highway Patrol's "maximum enforcement period'' will begin at 6 p.m. and conclude at 11:59 p.m. Monday.
"Whatever causes impairment makes you an unsafe driver,'' CHP Commissioner Warren Stanley said. "High visibility enforcement ... will help create a general deterrence and promote safer driving.''
