The City Council voted in favor to replace the current site of Amoeba Music in Hollywood located on the intersection of Sunset and Cahuenga boulevards with a new 26-story development Tuesday night.

For some Hollywood residents, Amoeba Music is more than a record store.

"Just the energy that's in it. There's been so many people that have gone in there and performed and just the whole feel of everything, gives it more meaning," said Hollywood resident Greg Díaz.

Tim Landfield, who has gone to Amoeba for years shares those sentiments.

"It's nostalgia. I've gone in there so many times to buy CD's, rent CD's, trade CD's. We're going to miss it," said Tim Landfield who frequents the popular music store.

The tower, which will be developed by GPI Companies is expected to encompass 200 apartments units, including 10 for low-income tenants, it was reported.

The record store is not closing its doors, but is looking to relocate and stay in its native Hollywood, according to co-owner Marc Weinstein in an interview with Variety magazine last year. In its move, Amoeba also hopes to obtain a dispensary permit.

Amoeba also has two Northern California locations in Berkeley and San Francisco.
