Kids arrested in Compton bakery looting

A group of kids -- one of them as young as 13 years old -- was arrested in connection to the Compton bakery looting.

Multiple people have been arrested after a street takeover in Compton led to the ransacking of a neighborhood bakery, including the driver who allegedly drove a stolen car through the storefront. That same alleged driver was also arrested in connection with another recent viral robbery, where a Los Angeles County deputy walked into a Carson 7-Eleven.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna announced the arrests of five suspects Tuesday evening.

The street takeover happened in the early morning hours of Jan. 2. Around 3:30 a.m., a Kia Soul rammed into the front of Ruben's Bakery repeatedly, so that thieves could get inside. Security footage showed the crowd rushing into the store and looting the place. Deputies said there were about 100 people who rushed in.

LASD estimated the robbery cost the bakery more than $40,000 in stolen items and damage.

Compton street takeover: Multiple arrests made

LA County Sheriff Robert Luna announced that multiple people were arrested for their involvement in a violent break-in at a family owned bakery following a street takeover in Compton.

"It's very heartbreaking to see what my family has built over the years to just be destroyed in five, six minutes," said Ruben Ramierez Jr., whose parents own the bakery, shortly after the robbery. "It just angers you."

With the support of the community, however, Ruben's Bakery was able to reopen just a few days later. A GoFundMe campaign to help the business raised over $90,000.

In a press conference Tuesday, Luna announced that the alleged driver who drove that Kia Soul through the bakery's front door was arrested back on Jan. 12. Because that suspect is a juvenile, they were released to their family.

That same day, Luna said, that same suspect was arrested for other robberies in the area, including a robbery at a Carson 7-Eleven, which was stopped when an LASD deputy walked into the store at the right time. That suspect is now being held in a juvenile detention center.

Four more people were arrested Tuesday morning in relation to the robbery at Ruben's Bakery, Luna said. Three remain in custody Tuesday, while the fourth has been released.

Dozens more were involved in the robbery, and Luna said the department hopes to arrest all of them. Anyone with information about those suspects is asked to contact the department at 1-800-222-8477.
