Detroit teacher raises money to buy winter coats for students

Teacher Consuelo Brewer has raised money to buy brand new winter coats, gloves, and hats for her students.

When Brewer saw that many of her students didn't have the right gear for the freezing Detroit winter, she decided to make sure they had what they needed.

Brewer got emotional as she told FOX 2, "Everyone should have that basic need of a coat."

In December, Brewer told her friends and family that this year instead of getting her Christmas and birthday gifts, she wanted them to donate money to buy the coats and other apparel. Within a month, Brewer was able to raise $17,000, which she used to buy 150 sets of coats, hats, and gloves for students.

Minnie Nix, a parent, said they are just as pleased as Brewer's students.

Said Nix, "The community needs to know that good things like this are happening at [Detroit Public Schools]. There are teachers and administrative staff who are very concerned about our children. I'm very pleased with DPS."
