California fires

The Eaton Fire burning just north of Los Angeles and the Palisades Fire that destroyed much of the seaside LA neighborhood of Pacific Palisades broke out Jan. 7.

Tens of thousands of people are still under evacuation orders more than a week later, and thousands more were under evacuation warnings as the area braced for continued dangerous weather conditions

The fires have killed at least 24 people, displaced thousands of others and destroyed more than 12,000 buildings. Nearly 30 people were missing.

Cal Fire reported that the Palisades, Eaton, Kenneth and Hurst fires have consumed a total area of about 63 square miles.

Investigators are still trying to determine what sparked the fires. They could be the nation's costliest ever.
