Crews work to battle Flats Fire

Two homes were destroyed by a wildfire in the San Bernardino National Forest, fire officials said. The blaze, dubbed the Flats Fire, scorched about 341 acres and crews were able to reach full containment on June 19.

Officials initially said the fire blackened 400 acres, but the acreage was reduced on June 15 due to more accurate mapping, San Bernardino National Forest officials said.

The impact of the fire initially prompted a mandatory evacuation order for Pinyon Crest and the partial closure of state Route 74 on Sunday.

A mandatory evacuation order was in place for Pinyon Crest, but was downgraded to an evacuation warning on Monday and lifted completely by Tuesday. An evacuation warning was also in effect for residents in Pinyon and Alpine Village, but that evacuation warning was also lifted by Tuesday.

USFS officials reported that one firefighter was injured and was undergoing a medical evaluation.

In addition to the two homes destroyed, three homes and three outbuildings were damaged by the fire.
