Large police presence in Hillsborough, shooting alleged

Burlingame police have issued a shelter-in-place order for residents due to police activity in the area. Hillsborough police are investigating an officer-involved shooting Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

A Hillsborough police officer was shot during an ambush-style attack in a police building's rear parking lot Saturday afternoon, officials said.

Hillsborough police officials said the police department was specifically targeted.

During the incident, police said the officer returned fire and that the suspect fled in an unknown direction. It remains unclear whether the suspect was struck by the officer's return gunfire.

The officer was taken to San Francisco General Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

Burlingame police issued a shelter-in-place order for residents due to the police activity in the area.

They asked residents in the area of Floribunda and El Camino Real to shelter-in-place until further notice.

Officers from multiple area departments, including SWAT team members and police with rifles, were seen canvassing the area into the evening. A police helicopter was also seen scouring the area from overhead.

What's next:

Police said the suspect still remains at large and officers remain at the scene and nearby areas in search of the shooter.

Police did not provide a description of the shooter, though said their preliminary investigation led them to a person of interest in South San Francisco.

That person was interviewed regarding the shooting. It's unclear if they face any charges at this time.
