High-voltage power lines down in Winnetka

Some high-voltage power lines toppled over on Tuesday in the Winnetka area, sparking several small grass fires.

The electrical lines were reported down on the east side of Winnetka Avenue, between Sherman Way and Vanowen Street, shortly before 1 p.m., amid a wind advisory issued by the weather service.

Residents were being asked to avoid the area and treat the downed power lines as deadly, according to Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

"Though there have been strong winds in the area, the LAFD does not formally determine the cause of downed wires," he said.

It's unclear how many customers may be experiencing power outages due to the downed lines.
