Kidnapping suspect who barricaded inside Palmdale apartment building taken into custody
PALMDALE, Calif. - A kidnapping suspect who barricaded inside a Palmdale apartment building was taken into custody after a nearly 20-hour standoff.
The female suspect had a child with her during the standoff and live-streamed much of the incident on social media.
Deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and Special Enforcement Bureau personnel responded to an apartment building in the 38000 block of Fifth Street East around 5:10 p.m. Wednesday after a man and woman barricaded themselves in a second-story unit. The man was taken into custody by about 6 p.m. Wednesday. But the female suspect remained in the apartment and could be seen holding a baby as she stepped onto the unit's balcony.
At one point during the standoff, the suspect went live on Instagram and said she had an unfair trial and has been treated unfairly by authorities. The suspect and her friends said she does not want to be separated from her children.
The woman surrendered around noon Thursday, according to the sheriff's Special Enforcement Bureau. Deputies took custody of the child. The woman, periodically cradling the young child in her arms, said she had been to court on unspecified charges and said the court system had failed her and her family.
People in surrounding units were evacuated for their safety.
