LA Animal Services offering free adoptions after being 'flooded' by kittens, cats
LOS ANGELES (FOX 11) - Los Angeles animal shelters are being flooded with kittens.
The organization says all six of their centers have been full since March, making it one of the most ‘intense kitten seasons’ they’ve seen.
“Intake has been averaging 22 percent higher for kittens and 14 percent higher for cats this year, which translates to more than 3,000 additional kittens and cats coming to our centers than we saw in 2018,” said Brenda Barnette, general manager of the Los Angeles Department of Animal Services.
Due to the overflow of kittens and cats, LAAS is partnering with the Best Friends Animal Society to encourage LA residents to adopt.
They have set a goal of 165 adoptions per month through the rest of the year. Those who cannot adopt can foster a cat.
Best Friends Animal Society says one of their goals is to make Los Angeles the nation’s largest no-kill city.
LAAS recorded an 89.7% save rate for pets entering their centers in 2018. They say that is a big increase from 57.7% when the Best Friends-led No Kill Los Angeles (NKLA) Initiative launched in 2012.
Doing so will not only help more felines find their families, it’ll help make Los Angeles the nation’s largest no kill city, which is the goal of the Best Friends-led No Kill Los Angeles (NKLA) Initiative.
“With so many cats and kittens entering the LA shelter system, L.A. pets need you now more than ever before,” said Jennifer Pimentel, executive director for Best Friends Animal Society in Los Angeles. “If you’re in the market for a kitten or cat, please come down and adopt one, or two, from Best Friends or LAAS. It will make a huge impact on the cats and the shelter staff who care for them, too.”
Adoptions fees will be waived for any kittens and cats at LA Animal Services through the end of the year.
