Dozens sickened after eating raw oysters during LA event celebrating city's best restaurants
LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is investigating a norovirus outbreak after 80 people were sickened from eating raw oysters during an event celebrating the best restaurants in town.
The oysters were served during an L.A. Times 101 Best Restaurants event on Dec. 3.
"At this time, over 80 attendees that consumed the oysters have reported illness, a majority with gastrointestinal symptoms that include diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain and vomiting," Public Health said in a statement.
According to the LA Times, the oysters were sourced by Santa Monica Seafood, a sponsor of the event, and provided to one of the restaurants featured in the 101 Best Restaurants list.
According to the health department, the outbreak is associated with a multi-jurisdictional outbreak linked to oysters that have now been recalled.
The recalled oysters are from Fanny Bay Select oysters and Fanny Bay XS oysters from Pacific Northwest Shellfish Co, BC740SP with a pack date of November 25, 2024 or later.
The date of the recall notice was December 13, 2024, the health department said.
The FDA is now advising restaurants and retailers to not sell or serve certain oysters from British Columbia, Canada due to potential contamination by Norovirus.
