LOS ANGELES, Calif. (FOX 11) - LAPD wants to deploy small drones that it describes as limited tactical situations, but there has been opposition from those who worry about invasion of privacy.
They plan to hold four community meetings Wednesday to hear more from the people about their department using drones. So far, opponents say the drone program would give LAPD a license to spy, conducting what some believe would be illegal surveillance on certain individuals and communities.
LAPD says its proposed year-long test program would only be deployed in certain situations, like standoffs and barricades with dangerous suspects and bomb scares.
LAPD says using the small drones will help them keep officers and the public safer.
If they decide proceed with the pilot program, the board of police commissioners would monitor it. If they feel it is successful they would consider making it permanent.
