Man critically injured when house explodes in Boyle Heights

A man was critically injured Thursday in an explosion at a single-story home in the Boyle Heights area.

The blast occurred around 12:35 p.m. in the 1100 block of South Lorena Street, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The 45-year-old unidentified man was taken to a hospital in critical condition, the LAFD reported. The nature of his injuries was not immediately disclosed.

The home suffered some structural damage to its walls, roof and interior. Adjacent homes were evacuated while crews worked to determine the cause of the blast.

An Urban Search and Rescue team equipped with specialized equipment was sent to the scene. Traffic was routed away from the area while an investigation was conducted. Building inspectors also were sent to the scene.
