(FOX 11/CNS) - A man was killed when the SUV that he was in was broadsided by a BMW racing at 90 miles per hour or more on Central Avenue in South Los Angeles early Sunday.
Police are seeking the driver of the other car, a white sedan that had been racing the 2009 BMW that both fatally injured a man and critically injured a woman.
The sedan and BMW were racing southbound just after 1:30 a.m. on Central Avenue, approaching the 5000 block of Central Avenue, when a 2002 Ford SUV pulled out from the west driveway of a business directly in the path of the oncoming vehicles, said Sgt. Kris Werner of the LAPD's Central Traffic Division.
"The driver of the BMW was unable to stop and collided with driver's side of the Ford SUV," Werner said. "The force of the violent impact launched the Ford SUV approximately 175 feet in a southbound direction."
The BMW continued out of control in a southbound direction, striking two other vehicles. There were no injuries to the occupants in the second crash, he said.
"According to witnesses, the two racing vehicles were traveling in speeds of 90 miles per hour," he said. "The driver of the white sedan left the scene and has not been identified."
Paramedics rushed the owner of the BMW to County/USC Medical Center, where he had stable life signs.
The people in the Ford SUV were also taken to County/USC Medical Center, where the woman was listed in critical condition and the man was pronounced dead from his injuries at 4:10 a.m., Werner said.
