Matt Atchity of Rotten Tomatoes: Mixed bag at the movies this weekend

This week Hollywood brings us a financial crisis, two dystopian satires and a Jane Austen adaptation, plus a horror movie that wasn't screened for critics.

Money Monster - Fresh at 62%

Starring: George Clooney, Julio Roberts, Jack O'Connell (Starred Up), Dominic West (The Wire), Caitriona Balfe (Outlander), Giancarlo Esposito

Directed by: Jodie Foster

Clooney plays Lee Gates, a Jim Cramer-type TV host who gives irreverent financial advice, and Julia Roberts is his long-suffering director. Their latest show goes wildly off script when a young man with a gun takes Lee hostage on live TV.

The Lobster - Certified Fresh at 91%

Starring: Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, Lea Seydoux, Ben Whishaw, John C. Reilly

Directed by: Yorgos Lanthimos (director of Dogtooth)

Farrell plays a David, a freshly divorced man in a world where you have 45 days to find a partner. If you don't pair up, you may get turned into an animal, and if you're lucky, you get to choose the animal (David's chooses a lobster). He spends his days at a hotel trying to find love, desperate to retain his humanity.

High Rise - Fresh at 65%

Starring: Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller (American Sniper), Luke Evans (The Hobbit), Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men), James Purefoy (Rome)

Directed by: Ben Wheatley (director of Kill List, Sightseers)

Dr. Robert Liang moves into a new skyscraper on a floor that has him rubbing elbows with both the richer, upper floor residents and the less fortunate lower floor residents. As problems such as power losses became more frequent in the new building, the society of the residents breaks down, and outright class warfare soon erupts. Based on the JG Ballard novel (writer of Crash and Empire of the Sun).

Love & Friendship - Fresh at 100%

Starring: Kate Beckinsale, Chloe Sevigny, Stephen Fry, Tom Bennett, Jemma Redgrave

Directed by: Whit Stillman (director of Metropolitan & Last Days of Disco)

Recently widowed Lady Susan visits her in-laws to lay low and dodge the rumors about her dalliances. While there, she angles to find a husband for both herself and her daughter, and her reputation won't keep her from her conniving, but oh-so-polite ways. Based on Jane Austen's Lady Susan.

The Darkness - Not reviewed for critics

Starring: Kevin Bacon, Radha Mitchell, David Mazouz (Gotham), Matt Walsh

A family unwittingly brings home an evil spirit that tries to destroy them.
