Midday Sunday: San Fernando Valley homeless

Since 1998, the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission (SFVRM) has been providing help to the homeless in the greater San Fernando Valley.

The SFVRM is located in Northridge, 35 miles from Downtown Los Angeles' infamous Skid Row.

An example of the SFVRM's Rescue Survival Outreach Services--known an "SOS"--is a mobile shower unit where homeless people and bathe and get clean clothing. Beginning in 2002, the SFVRM started a family shelter program.

The latest statistics on homelessness indicate that families are the fastest growing part of Los Angeles' homeless population.

In the SFVRM's words, "the program has been designed to provide homeless men, women, children and families an opportunity, not only to obtain food, shelter, and basic life necessities, but also provides a foundation for individual and family restoration by developing a personalized plan based on their needs for achieving personal growth, employment, and housing."

The San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission is a Christian-based outreach ministry of the Rescue Mission Alliance.

The mission's website is at sfvrescuemission.org. The telephone is (818) 785-4476.
