Missing boy found unattended at school playground in Gardena

A young boy was found unattended Thursday afternoon at a school playground in Gardena, the result of a mix-up with a babysitter.

The 2- to 3-year-old boy was found about 2:45 p.m. at Denker Avenue Elementary School at Denker and Gardena Boulevard, according to Gardena police, who said he hadn't spoken to officers and was unable to tell them his name.

Police announced about 3:25 p.m. that the toddler was identified and was being reunited with his family.

"It looks like the babysitter, who was in charge of picking up other children at the school, didn't account for him when she left," according to a police statement. "We are going to make sure that proper steps are taken so
this won't happen again."
