'Motown: The Musical' Opens At The Pantages Theatre
(FOX 11) Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson...what do they all have in common? Their breakout happened during the Motown era! So, without a doubt, you know the musical Motown will have you tapping your feet! Motown opens at Pantages theatre tonight and will play in town till June 7th. Our Julie Chang talked with Motown Records founder Berry Gordy. She asked, "Did you know when you were writing your book that it could one day be a musical?". Gordy gives an honest and funny answer. He says, "I got into the business to write music, for money, and to get girls". So no...it was never his plan to one day have a musical based on his life.
Julie also spoke to Smokey Robinson. She asked the legend if we could ever replicate the kind of talent that came out of the Motown era. Smokey says, "yes!" The Grammy winner says Alicia Keys, Bruno Mars, Beyonce, Taylor Swift are just a few artists defining this era's music.
