New Year's forecast: Santa Ana winds bring fire weather concerns back to Southern California

Forecasters with the National Weather Service said Southern California will be ringing in the new year with warmer temperatures and significant fire weather conditions.

"Elevated fire weather becoming widespread Monday, then critical fire weather conditions likely Tuesday through Thursday for Santa Ana prone areas of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties," the NWS said.

Offshore winds are expected to sweep the region Monday through Thursday, the NWS said, with the strongest winds occurring in the typical Santa Ana wind corridor of eastern Ventura and Los Angeles counties. Advisories will likely be issued by the NWS during this time.

Temperatures are also expected to be above-normal for this time of year. The NWS predicted Thursday to be the warmest day of the week, with high temperatures west of the mountains topping out in the 70s to lower 80s and in the 60s across interior sections.
