One student hospitalized, another arrested following on-campus fight at school
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - A seventh-grade boy was hospitalized and a ninth-grade boy was arrested following a fight Thursday afternoon at Corona del Mar Middle & High School, district officials said Friday.
“One student was taken to a hospital and we remain in contact with the parents,” Newport-Mesa Unified School District Spokeswoman Annette Franco said. “The other student was arrested."
School officials said that the 14-year-old freshman pushed the 12-year-old, who hit his head and had to be transported to a local hospital. The 14-year-old student was arrested and charged with battery with intent to cause great bodily harm. Both students are juveniles, therefore, their names will not be released.
The middle and high school are in separate buildings but on the same campus.
The Newport-Mesa Unified School District said in a statement to FOX 11 that a school resource officer and paramedics immediately responded.
"The district is working with site administrators to determine disciplinary action," the district said. "Our schools respond as quickly as possible to any issues on our campuses. Please trust that we are taking appropriate action."
The current condition of the hospitalized student was not immediately disclosed.
Franco said they don’t usually have physical altercations on this campus.
No additional information has been released at this time.
