Pasadena mask mandate begins as new COVID-19 cases surge
Pasadena residents, regardless of their vaccination status, will need to once again mask up in indoor settings beginning July 22.
PASADENA, Calif. - Pasadena residents, regardless of their vaccination status, will need to once again mask up in indoor settings.
The City of Pasadena's indoor mask mandate went into effect Thursday, July 22 at 12:01 a.m. and the order applies to everyone regardless of vaccination status.
Wednesday's announcement comes less than two days after Pasadena's Health Department Director Ying-Ying Goh told FOX 11's Phil Shuman that she will implement the indoor mask mandate and have the rule align with the Los Angeles County mask mandate that kicked into effect over the weekend.
The mask mandate will require face coverings for everyone, regardless of vaccination status, in all indoor public settings, venues, gatherings and businesses.

FOX 11 was joined by Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo and reporter Phil Shuman as the city is on the verge of bringing back its indoor mask mandate.
Examples of these settings include the following:
- Offices
- Retail
- Grocery stores
- Restaurants, bars, pubs and breweries when not eating or drinking
- Theaters
- Gyms and fitness centers
- State and local government offices serving the public

Prior to Wednesday evening's development, the City of Pasadena did not reinstate the indoor mask mandate like Los Angeles County because the city has its own health agency. Prior to Goh's update to FOX 11's Phil Shuman earlier in the week, the city's stance was to recommend indoor masking, not enforce it.
Long Beach, another city geographically located in Los Angeles County, also has its own health department but it had announced the city will align with Los Angeles County's reinstated indoor mask mandate last Thursday.
