'Pillowcase Rapist' taken back into custody, DA's office confirms

Christopher Evans Hubbart, the so-called "Pillowcase Rapist'' who was released from a state psychiatric hospital in 2014 and placed in a home near Palmdale despite outcry from residents and elected officials, has been taken into custody, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

It's not immediately clear why Hubbart, 65, was taken into custody.

Hubbart had been deemed a "mentally disordered sex offender" when he was sent to Atascadero State Hospital in 1972.

Following his release seven years later, he raped dozens of women in the Bay Area.

After his arrest, he was confined to Coalinga State Hospital before being released to the Lake Los Angeles area in 2014.
