An off-duty Fontana police officer shot and killed a robbery suspect at his Apple Valley home early Wednesday morning, according to San Bernardino Sheriff's deputies.
He told San Bernardino sheriff deputies that he woke up around 5:30 a.m. and found someone in his Ochoa Road home armed with a gun trying to steal things, including a motorcycle in his garage.
He said he tried calming down the suspect and after struggling with him, held him at gunpoint.
He says the person refused to lay on the ground and as he reached for his waistband, he shot him in the chest outside the home.
The suspect was taken to St. Mary St. Joseph Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Sheriff deputies say the homeowner wasn't hurt.
The police officer, who has been with Fontana PD for eight years, has been put on paid leave.
The police officer and suspect have not been identified yet.
