Police surrounded a building housing a Hare Krishna temple in the Palms area of Los Angeles after a man, possibly armed, called authorities and made a threat against the facility.

It's unclear if the man was holed up inside the facility or called from another location.

Officers went to the Hare Krishna Cultural Center near Regent Street and Watseka Avenue about 7 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

About 40 people were evacuated from the surrounding area, and police began working to determine if the man actually had explosives and was barricaded in the structure, LAPD Officer Meghan Aguilar said.

The standoff was continuing as of late this morning.
