Royal Caribbean cruise death: FBI investigating death of unruly passenger detained by security
The FBI has launched an investigation into the death of a Royal Caribbean cruise passenger who died after being detained by security. The incident occurred aboard a cruise ship bound for Ensenada, Mexico, departing from the Port of San Pedro.
FOX 11 first reported that 35-year-old Michael Virgil was identified as the unruly passenger aboard the ship. Cell phone footage showed Virgil cursing and attempting to kick down doors. Witnesses also reported that he attacked crew members and spewed profanity during what they described as a fit of rage.
The incident escalated, with security allegedly using pepper spray, zip ties, and handcuffs to subdue Virgil. According to Virgil’s family, security also injected him with a sedative. He died within an hour of being detained.
The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office has identified Virgil but has not yet released the cause of death.
Virgil’s family described his behavior as uncharacteristic and noted that he left behind a 7-year-old son with autism and a fiancé, both of whom were aboard the cruise.
