Southern California college student among those injured in New Orleans attack
A San Diego State University student is among the 35 injured during a New Year's Day New Orleans attack.
Steele Idelson was on Bourbon Street when Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, of Houston, who was also an Army veteran, rammed his pickup truck into a crowd, killing 14 people, and injuring dozens, like her, before he was killed in a police shootout.
On Thursday, SDSU spokesperson Rafael Avitabile confirmed that Idelson is currently a student at San Diego State University, but couldn't say more, citing student privacy.
Idelson was with her friend, Elle Eisle, a student at the University of Georgia, both of whom were from Fort Myers, Florida. Both attended the Canterbury School there and graduated in 2023, according to OnlineAthens.com.
A photo of the two of them in May 2023, shows both young women in their respective college shirts.
Eisele wrote in the Instagram post: San Diego State University don't take her away from me.
In a statement to Fox Atlanta 5, their families said they were grateful for their "outpouring of thoughts, prayers, and offers of support for our daughters following the tragic attack in New Orleans."
The families' statement also said both young women are receiving care at the University Medical Center.
Officials have not yet released the names of the 15 people killed in the New Orleans New Year’s Day truck attack, but their families and friends have started sharing their stories. New Orleans Coroner Dr. Dwight McKenna said in a statement late Wednesday that they will release the names of the dead once autopsies are complete and they’ve talked with the next of kin.
