Elderly man, pit bull die after dog fight in Simi Valley

An elderly man and his pit bull died while they were out on a walk in Simi Valley Friday afternoon, after the pit bull escaped and got in a fight with another dog.

It happened around 2 p.m., along Big Springs Avenue. Officers with the Simi Valley Police Department responded after calls of a dog attack.

According to their investigation, a man was out for a walk with his pit bull, when the pit bull broke free and attacked another dog. The two dogs' owners tried to separate them. It's unclear what happened after that, but the pit bull died. The SVPD said the dog may have been restrained too roughly as the owners were trying to separate the dogs.

Shortly after that, the pit bull's owner went into cardiac arrest, officers said, and died at the scene shortly after.

The man has not been identified.

It's unclear if anyone else or the other dog was injured.

The Simi Valley Police Department is investigating the incident.
