Six Metro Green Line stations will shut down for two weeks

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (FOX 11) - Metro is shutting down six stations at the tail end of the Green Line -- including the Aviation/LAX stop -- for two weeks beginning Friday night.

The closure will allow construction workers to connect the Green and Expo Lines with the $2 billion, future Crenshaw light rail that will carry passengers directly into LAX.

Metro warns riders on the Green Line to prepare for longer commute times.

"This is very important work to make sure the connections work properly," said Metro Spokesperson Jose Ubaldo.

Regular Green Line service will begin as usual at Norwalk until it reaches the Crenshaw station. There, buses will shuttle riders to the South Bay. In all, six stations will close -- Hawthorne/Lenox, Aviation/LAX, Mariposa, El Segundo, Douglas, and Redondo Beach. MetroBuses, however, will continue servicing the six closed stations.

If you take the train to the airport, you'll be forced off at the Crenshaw station in Hawthorne, take a shuttle bus to the Aviation station, and meet "Shuttle G" at its usual spot to continue on to the airport.

Metro Rider Ed Call remembers the closure from January 2018 that lasted nine weeks.

"We'd get off at Crenshaw, go up the escalator. It was cold and windy," said Call. "They had bus services, and that seemed to work out pretty nicely."

Metro says shuttles will run every six minutes during weekday peaks, and every 15 minutes during midday and on weekends, adding that metro workers would be on hand at stations if riders have questions.

The work is expected to be completed by 3 a.m. Sunday, January 20.
