SÜPRMARKT app helps solve the problem of food deserts in South LA
LOS ANGELES - That was renowned Chef Roy Choi in the video, and joining us in studio was Olympia Auset. She is the founder of SÜPRMARKT which is a low-cost organic grocer serving low-income communities in Los Angeles.
SÜPRMARKT makes it easy and affordable to eat well in LA's food deserts. They provide affordable organics in weekly pop-ups. They also deliver across L.A. and accept EBT.
South Central is home to more than 1.3 million residents and only approximately 60 grocery stores for its residents. Since starting, SÜPRMARKT has served up over 40,000 pounds of organic produce in South Central and beyond.
People across the nation mourned the death of Nipsey Hustle and the impact he had on his community and now SÜPRMARKT is hoping to have a unique role in that legacy. Their next step is to open a healthy retail + wellness location.
SÜPRMARKT is raising funds to open South Central's first organic produce market at a historic space in Nipsey Square.
The campaign has drawn the backing of such figures as Roy Choi, Issa Rae, KatVonD, and more. Nearly 1,400 people have contributed $115,000 in tax-deductible donations to the #keepslausonfresh campaign so far.
$250,000 more is needed to secure and renovate the space that formerly housed Mr. Wisdom’s. Donations are welcomed at suprmarkt.la/ksf.
