null - The average American spends six hours consuming some type of media every day, and there’s a correlation between excessive media scrolling and "very poor" mental health, a new survey reveals.
Talker Research’s inaugural Media Consumption Trend Report surveyed 2,000 people to see what "media consumption looks like from a generational perspective, and what impact media has on our everyday lives, including our mental health."

The survey found younger people (Gen Z) spend even more time consuming media, and they’re the most likely to be on their screens 15-plus hours a day. On average, survey respondents believe they "lose" three days a month to scrolling online.

The survey also found a link between media consumption and mental health: Older people who generally consume less media were more likely to say their mental health is excellent or good than younger generations.

Two-thirds of Gen Zers surveyed agreed that they spend too much time consuming content, and more than half say their mood is often negatively impacted by social media.
It's not the only survey that shows young people are worried about their social media use: According to the BePresent 2024 Digital Wellness Report, 83% of Gen Z feel they have an unhealthy relationship with their phones, significantly higher than any other generation.
The report also found that 80% of people spend three or more hours on their phones each day.
Other key findings
The survey also looked at what type of media people are looking at and found that only 14% of Gen Z Americans and 20% of millennials have paid for cable in the past year.
Netflix and Amazon Prime were the most popular streaming services for Americans, with nearly half saying they subscribe to Netflix (49%) and 43% saying they have Prime Video.
The average respondent spends about $67 per month on various media services.
