Verdugo Hills student attacked because of his race, mom says

The mother of a 14-year-old Verdugo Hills High School student says her son was repeatedly attacked by classmates, targeted because of his race. She says the school didn't discipline the attackers.

A mom claims her 14-year-old son has been bullied at Verdugo Hills High School and the attacks allegedly have to do with the fact that he’s Black.

Despite video evidence, her son’s attackers are not being disciplined, the mom said.

Earlier in the month, the high school captured headlines for all the wrong reasons after a stabbing incident broke out on campus and the 14-year-old ended up getting arrested.

The mom says all this could have been avoided had the school jumped in during the earlier alleged attacks.

FOX 11 was shown a cell phone video of her son being slammed into the bathroom floor with two other students jumping him. At one point, racial slurs were being hurled by the students.

His mom, who did not give her name, said she met with the school days after the bathroom fight.

"They didn’t care," the mom recalled. "Didn’t do nothing for the other kids."

Instead, according to her, the school offered to transfer her son to a different school.

The stabbing incident caused the school to shut down and two students ended up needing medical attention. The woman’s son has since been charged with assault with a deadly weapon, she said.

The attorney representing the teen argues he was just protecting himself.

FOX 11 reached out to LAUSD in hopes of hearing from the district, but a spokesperson said it does not comment on pending litigation.
