The Grim Sleeper: The hearing before the Defense Opening Statement is Raucus

We're in the courtroom of Judge Kathleen Kennedy. The trial of alleged serial killer Lonnie Franklin has been going on for a month or so. The prosecution has laid out its case. In a non-traditional move as Defense Attorney Seymour Amster tells the jury they should expect to that DNA analysis and ballistics information would be different than what the prosecution laid out.

He'll try to cast a shadow on what the prosecution has presented. But, because Amster seemingly can't get the expert witnesses he wants there is yelling, anger and frustration from him, the Judge and the prosecuting attorney.

Those in the audience are scratching their heads. Before the jury enters the courtroom the motions being considered have Amster so upset that at one point he says he can't defend his client and that the "defense rests."

Kennedy doesn't buy it and, after a short break, Amster gives his opening statement. Lonnie Franklin is fighting for his life. He's accused of killing 9 women and a teenager. Valerie McCovey, Princess Berthomieux, Mary Lowe, Lachrica Jefferson, Janicia Peters are among them. The others are Henrietta Wright, Deborah Jackson, Bernita Sparks, Barbara Ware and Alicia Alexander.

Their family members sit in the audience. After all the yelling settles down Amster goes monotone to explain that the lab he's contracted with doesn't find Franklin's DNA among many of the samples which have evidence of several other contacts. And, he'll target ballistics.

That's the backdrop for which part two of the trial of the alleged "Grim Sleeper" launches.
