YWCA honors 'phenomenal' L.A. women
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (FOX 11) - With the mottos to Erase Racism and Empower Women, the YWCA of Greater Los Angeles held its annual Phenomenal Woman awards on Thursday.
Their "Woman of the Year" was awarded to Maria Salinas the first female head of the L.A. Chamber of Commerce. Salinas spoke of being a native Angeleno and getting into business after meeting her father's accountant and seeing an office job for the first time in her life.
Faye Washington is the longtime powerhouse at the helm of YWCA L.A. The organization has "community-focused programs that make a significant difference in the lives of women, children, and families."
The YWCA GLA also paid tribute to the late LAUSD Superintendent Michelle King.
Fox 11's Christine Devine interviewed both Washington and Salinas. Devine, a former YWCA GLA honoree, attended the luncheon at the Omni Hotel downtown and helped in the recognition of women in the workforce at a number of Los Angeles companies.
