Death of George Floyd

A curfew has been issued following another day of violence, looting and destruction throughout parts of Los Angeles city and county. 

A demonstration with more than 500 people at the base of the Huntington Beach Pier on Sunday has been declared an unlawful assembly, according to a police official.   

Looters attacked the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica on Sunday, the third straight day that local protests against police brutality were marred by criminal activity.  

Melrose Avenue was one of the main hotspots affected by rioting and looting overnight.

What began as a protest in Beverly Hills on Saturday over the in-custody death of George Floyd led to looting of the Alexander McQueen clothing store on Rodeo Drive, attacks on three police vehicles and multiple incidents of vandalism.  

Governor Gavin Newsom on Saturday night authorized assistance after a request from the city and county of Los Angeles, and proclaimed a state of emergency in Los Angeles County.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and other community leaders called for peace on Saturday evening as protesters continued to damage property while advocating against police brutality, spurred by the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.  

In one of the darkest nights in Los Angeles, crowds defied curfew orders set forth by local officials and instead vandalized, looted, and destroyed several businesses. 

The Los Angeles mayor asked for the National Guard to be sent into the nation's second-largest city as crowds torched police cars and vandalized and burglarized stores while clashing with lines of officers.  

Massive protests continued Saturday in Los Angeles after a night of violence hit the streets of downtown Los Angeles. 

After four days of widespread protests in Los Angeles due to the death of George Floyd, Mayor Eric Garcetti has issued a curfew in order to curb the violence.
