Climate scientists say we could be in for a long hot summer

Southern California's strange weather patterns don't appear to be ending anytime soon.

We didn't see heavy rains this winter. And now climate scientists say this summer could be taking an unusual turn too.

JPL climate scientists say May Gray and June Gloom might be cut short this year … meaning it will be hotter and drier … not good for fire season.

Meteorologists with the national weather service agree that we could be heading into a long hot summer.

"Every month has been warmer and warmer and warmer, so it's ok to say we'll probably have a warmer June than last year," said Eric Boldt with the National Weather Service.

Boldt says El Nino could be the reason why we won't be seeing those cooler temps in May and June.

"We live by extremes. The weather can be very extremely heavy rain, extreme heat ....so we need to prepare for the next event which could be fire," said Boldt.

But a longer, hotter winter doesn't phase Ventura County Fire Captain Ken VanWig

He says his team will be prepared for anything.

"With the way fire seasons are here in Ventura County it's pretty much never ending. We're always prepping, always ready," said VanWig.
