Crews battle fast moving brush fire near Malibu

MALIBU, Calif. (FOX 11 / CNS) - A fire that went to two alarms on Friday burned about seven acres of brush on a Malibu hillside today and prompted the closure of Kanan Road and a stretch of Mulholland Highway.

Firefighters were sent to the area of Mulholland Highway and Kanan Road about 12:45 p.m., and battled the flames with ground crews and three water-dropping helicopters, according to Inspector Joey Marron of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The blaze went to a second alarm -- meaning additional crews were called in -- shortly after 1 p.m. as the flames began spotting ahead on the hillside terrain.

About 200 firefighters responded, Marron said.

Officials initially estimated the blaze at about two acres, but crews at the scene later reported the fire was holding at about seven acres charred, Marron said.

One firefighter suffered a minor leg injury when hit by a rock, according to a report from the scene.

The bulk of the fire was under control by about 3:40 p.m., and by then the helicopters had been recalled, but one was later redeployed to assist in dousing hot spots as firefighters were in mop-up mode, a dispatcher said.

Kanan Road was reopened about 3:30 p.m., but Mulholland Highway remained closed east of Kanan, according to Malibu Emergency Services.
