Nearly 90 animals were seized and turned over to the SPCA of Texas from a self-described "sanctuary" for animals near Canton.

There were dozens of horses, donkeys, pigs and a longhorn on the property. The Van Zandt County Sheriff's Office said many were roaming in a large, fenced pasture but with no access to food and little to no access to water.

Officials said the animals appear to have varying health issues including malnourishment. More than 50 deceased horses were also found on the property.

The animals will be examined by medical staff and cared for until a custody hearing takes place next week.
