Hit-and-run driver arrested after critically injuring wheelchair-bound man

A tip from a citizen has led to the arrest of a wanted hit-and-run driver.

Around 9:30 a.m. Saturday, someone reported that a vehicle parked in a residential area matched the description of a hit-and-run vehicle.

A further investigation led detectives to Santa Ana resident Lucio Luna, 48, who was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and DUI.

The collision happened in the area of 1st and Townsend Streets around 10:30 p.m. Friday.

The man in the wheelchair was in a marked crosswalk going south on 1st when he was struck by a vehicle heading east. The driver failed to stop and continued driving.

Police say the suspect vehicle, a black or dark colored Toyota Camry, sustained extensive damage to its front end.

When officers arrived on scene they found the pedestrian down in the roadway. They say he had a faint pulse and shallow breathing. The victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition. No word yet on his current condition.
