Large sinkhole opens up in Manhattan Beach

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. (FOX 11) - A large sinkhole opened up on Thursday in Manhattan Beach after heavy rain and storms moved through Southern California.

The sinkhole formed in front of Mira Costa High School. The sinkhole is at least eight feet deep and stretches 22-feet underneath the pavement. Public Works is working on resolving the issue.

Officials said that all of the rain the area had combined with water leaking from a rusted cast-iron pipe eroded the soil in the area causing the sinkhole to form. The pipe is reportedly over 70 years old.

Manhattan Beach Police said that a portion of Artesia Boulevard is closed in both directions from Peck Avenue to Stanford Avenue. The portion of the road is scheduled to remain closed through Monday. Motorists are asked to seek alternate routes.
