Mattel releases Barbie doll of ballerina Misty Copeland
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (FOX 11) - Mattel is introducing a Barbie doll of ballerina Misty Copeland, the first African-American woman to be named a principal dancer in the American Ballet Theater (ABT).
The company made the announcement in a press release, saying Copeland has been a role model to girls throughout her career.
The doll is part of the Barbie 'Sheroes' program which honors women heroes who break boundaries and expand possibilities for women everywhere. Previous Barbie Sheroes include Kristen Chenoweth, Trisha Yearwood and Zendaya.
The new doll wears a red dress that is inspired by Copeland's Firebird costume from her first ABT principal role.
