Police union nervous about open carry laws during RNC

Thousands of people are in Cleveland to kick off the Republican National Convention.

They can't bring water guns in the area near the RNC but they can bring guns.

On Monday, some demonstrators were armed with handguns and rifles.

That's making police nervous, because it comes one day after three officers were gunned down in Baton Rouge.

The police union requested Governor John Kasich to suspend open carry laws.

Kasich responded he is not allowed.

His spokesman added:

"Ohio governors do not have the power to arbitrarily suspend federal and state constitutional rights."

But Cleveland Police Patrolman's Association President Steve Loomis notes open carry is suspended in the secure zone around quicken loans arena.

"Are you telling me that the lives of the delegates are more important than the lives of our officers and the people here?" "If the governor is not going to do everything he can to make officers in this state - including his state troopers safe, then shame on him."
