President Trump's Twitter announcement sparks protests across the country
(FOX 11) - "I was feeling multiple emotions at once I was definitely disappointed and hurt," Rudy Akbarian said as he reacted to the news he might lose his job as an army reservist all because he's transgender.
"I was definitely afraid, but I have this unique quality that I acquired from the military and that's to never give up," Akbarian said.
There's no formal policy just yet, but President Trump tweeted Wednesday - "After consultation with my generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the US military."
"Based on consultation he's had with his national security team they came to the conclusion that it erodes military readiness and unit cohesion," White House spokesperson, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, said.
But Akbarian said, he's received nothing but support from his military superiors.
At the Los Angeles LGBT Center the community gathered to find ways to fight back on the President's new policy.
Joshua Gershick, a transgender veteran who served as a female in the 1970's and 1980's, attended the rally.
"I was involved in the fight to lift the ban on gay and lesbian service so we've been here before," Gershick said.
The Center estimates Trumps transgender ban would affect more than 15,000 service members nationwide.
"I enlisted as a female went to boot camp and everything as a female and started transiting to male while enlisted," Akbarian said.
The President also tweeted medical costs for transgender individuals are too expensive.
"Forcing tax payers to pay for sex changes in the military, the military is not a place where you should be doing sex changes," Randy Thomas, Pres. Save California, said.
"Not every transgender person is going to want surgery," Akbarian said. "This is basic healthcare your talking about."
